Keith Haring (1958–1990) was an American artist and social activist whose bold, graphic style made art accessible to a wide audience. He rose to prominence in the early 1980s through his chalk drawings in New York City subway stations. His iconic imagery — radiant babies, barking dogs, and dancing figures — became universally recognized symbols of 1980s pop culture.
His most celebrated works include Radiant Baby (1982), his most iconic motif; Crack is Wack (1986), a mural on a handball court in Harlem; the Pop Shop drawings (1986); Tuttomondo (1989), a massive mural in Pisa, Italy; and Ignorance = Fear (1989), his powerful AIDS awareness poster. His subway chalk drawings from 1980–1985 are also highly prized.
Haring's style features bold black outlines, flat vivid colors, and simplified, cartoon-like figures in constant motion. Influenced by graffiti, Pop Art, and comic books, his work is characterized by continuous, unbroken lines that convey energy and movement. He drew without sketching or erasing, creating his compositions in a single, fluid gesture.
Keith Haring died on February 16, 1990, at the age of 31, from AIDS-related complications in New York City. After his diagnosis in 1988, he established the Keith Haring Foundation to support AIDS organizations and children's programs. He used his remaining time to create art focused on AIDS awareness and activism.
In 1986, Haring opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, New York, selling affordable merchandise featuring his artwork — T-shirts, posters, toys, and magnets. The shop was his effort to make art accessible to everyone, not just gallery collectors. He stated: "I wanted to attract the same wide audience that I had been reaching through my subway drawings." The shop operated until 2005.
